Cape Vidal Wildlife

Expect to see four of the Big 5 with close encounters with white Rhino and some times Leopard. With Kudu being one of the most majestic animals to view and in the wide open spaces of the Park their antlers(horns) grow wide open. Some of the best Rowland Ward specimen can be found here.

Playing hide and go seek in the undergrowth with the visitors is the always elusive Red Duiker. Mating only once in their live the Duiker is very weary and alert. Hiding in the shades of the same bushes is the agressive Bush Buck and hunter stories confirm that when on the spoor of a this seemingly friendly animal one should have eyes in the back of your head.

Fleet footing over the grass plains or lying in the valleys between the high rises one will find the lighter than usual Reed Buck. Family groups vary from one to seven with only one or two males amongst the females. Behind them on the ridges of the high rises will stand the Water Buck with the Big white target on their bums. Tour Guides will convince you that they where the first ones on the ark… the toilet seats where still wet.

Some of the smaller critters to be awarded right of way is the dung beetle. Every where a Hippo or Rhino has left a bowl of excreted food you will find various species of dung beetles. A silent rule of the road is not to drive through the dung. Not only is this a awkward smell that will stick to the inside of the vehicles air vents it will destroy creatures that makes a very important part of the food cycle.
